The rent works. The neighborhood works. Your sectional might overwhelm the living room.<\/p>\n<p>Your king-size bed might fit inside the bedroom but leave almost no walking space. Your dining table may fit in the dining area but block the path to the kitchen. And sometimes the furniture would fit perfectly inside the apartment, if only you could get it through the front door.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s why you shouldn&#8217;t wait until moving day to find out.Before paying to move heavy furniture to your new apartment, measure three things:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Your furniture. The space where it will go. The entire path the furniture must travel to get there. <\/strong>Here&#8217;s how to do it.<\/p>\n<h1><strong>Why Square Footage Doesn&#8217;t Tell You Whether Your Furniture Will Fit<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>Suppose you&#8217;re moving from a 900-square-foot apartment to an 850-square-foot apartment.<\/p>\n<p>You might assume:<\/p>\n<p><strong>&ldquo;It&#8217;s only 50 square feet smaller. apartments with identical square footage can function very differently.<\/p>\n<p>One may have a large open living room.<\/p>\n<p>Another may divide the same space among narrow rooms and hallways.<\/p>\n<p>So don&#8217;t ask only:<\/p>\n<p><strong>&ldquo;How big is the apartment?&rdquo;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ask:<\/p>\n<p><strong>&ldquo;How much usable space does each room actually have?&rdquo;<\/strong><\/p>\n<h1><strong>Step 1: Get the Apartment Floor Plan<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>If possible, get a floor plan before moving.<\/p>\n<p>Apartment communities and landlords sometimes provide one online or during the leasing process.<\/p>\n<p>Look for dimensions for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Living room<\/li>\n<li>Bedrooms<\/li>\n<li>Dining area<\/li>\n<li>Office<\/li>\n<li>Closets<\/li>\n<li>Hallways<\/li>\n<li>Balconies<\/li>\n<li>Entryways<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But don&#8217;t assume every floor plan is perfectly precise.<\/p>\n<p>Floor plans can be illustrative, and individual units may differ.<\/p>\n<p>If furniture fit is important, <a
