The moving truck is booked. You know what time you&#8217;re getting the keys.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There&#8217;s just one problem: <\/span><strong>Your building doesn&#8217;t have a loading dock.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At first, that might not sound like a major issue. People move in and out of apartments without loading docks every day. But a loading dock solves several moving-day problems at once. It gives the truck somewhere predictable to park, creates a relatively short path between the building and the truck, and separates moving activity from normal resident traffic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without one, you have to solve those problems yourself. Where will the truck park?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How far will movers have to carry everything? Which entrance can you use?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can furniture fit through it? Is there an elevator? Does the building restrict moving hours? And what happens if someone takes the parking space you were counting on?&nbsp; A successful apartment move without a loading dock comes down to one thing:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Plan the route from your apartment door all the way to the truck before moving day.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here&#8217;s how.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_Find_Out_Where_the_Moving_Truck_Is_Actually_Allowed_to_Park\"><\/span><strong>1. Find Out Where the Moving Truck Is Actually Allowed to Park<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don&#8217;t wait until the truck arrives to answer this question.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walk outside your building and look at the street from the perspective of someone driving a moving truck.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The closest parking space may not necessarily be usable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There could be:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">no-parking zones;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fire lanes;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bus stops;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">narrow streets;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">parking meters;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">resident-only spaces;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">garage restrictions;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">height limitations;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">building rules;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">temporary street restrictions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask your property manager or leasing office where residents normally place moving trucks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your building doesn&#8217;t have a formal moving area, ask what previous residents have done.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The important question isn&#8217;t simply: <\/span><strong>&ldquo;Is there parking?&rdquo;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s: <\/span><strong>&ldquo;Where can a <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.getbellhops.com\/blog\/do-movers-take-apart-furniture\"><strong>moving truck legally<\/strong><\/a><strong> and realistically remain while my belongings are being loaded?&rdquo;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those are very different questions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Dont_Underestimate_the_Distance_From_Your_Apartment_to_the_Truck\"><\/span><strong>2. Don&#8217;t Underestimate the Distance From Your Apartment to the Truck<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A move becomes more demanding when every item has to travel a long distance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Imagine two apartments with exactly the same furniture and number of boxes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At Apartment A, the truck is 30 feet from the entrance. At Apartment B, the truck is parked halfway down the block. The inventory is identical.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The workload isn&#8217;t. Every box, chair, mattress, table, and dresser has to travel that additional distance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And the distance multiplies. An extra 100 feet doesn&#8217;t sound significant until it applies to dozens of trips.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is why parking proximity can have such a large effect on apartment-moving logistics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you&#8217;re planning the move, estimate the entire carrying route:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Apartment &rarr; hallway &rarr; elevator or stairs &rarr; lobby &rarr; building entrance &rarr; sidewalk &rarr; truck.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Look for anything that could slow that route down.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Ask_Your_Building_About_Moving_Rules\"><\/span><strong>3. A good moving entrance needs more than a door.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Door width.<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Will your largest furniture fit?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Steps.<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Are there stairs between the sidewalk and entrance?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Turns.<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Is there enough room to maneuver large pieces?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Door operation.<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Does the door automatically close or lock?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Distance.<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> How far is it from the likely truck location?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The shortest route isn&#8217;t always the easiest route. A slightly longer route with wide doors and fewer stairs may be much more practical than a shorter route with tight corners.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Measure_Large_Furniture_Before_Moving_Day\"><\/span><strong>5. Measure Large Furniture Before Moving Day<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The day you&#8217;re moving a sofa is a bad time to discover that it doesn&#8217;t fit through the entrance you&#8217;re supposed to use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Measure large items such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sofas;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sectionals;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mattresses;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bed frames;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dressers;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dining tables;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">desks;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">large shelving units.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then measure the critical points along the route.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That can include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">apartment doorway;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hallway;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">elevator opening;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">elevator interior;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stairwell;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lobby doors;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exterior entrance.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pay attention to turns as well. Furniture may technically fit through a doorway but still be impossible to rotate through the space immediately beyond it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6_Reserve_the_Elevator_If_Your_Building_Allows_It\"><\/span><strong>6. Reserve the Elevator If Your Building Allows It<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you live above the ground floor, the elevator can become the most important part of your moving plan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some apartment buildings require residents to reserve an elevator for moves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Others may designate a particular elevator. Even when reservations aren&#8217;t required, ask management about the best time to move. You don&#8217;t want movers waiting in the hallway while residents repeatedly use the same elevator. If an elevator reservation is available, arrange it well before moving day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And confirm the reservation shortly before the move.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"7_Have_a_Backup_Plan_for_the_Elevator\"><\/span><strong>7.
