In addition to going to UNC-Charlotte, I&#8217;ve helped move people all over the Queen City.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Here&#8217;s what you need to know:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 id=\"h-rate-of-property-crime-in-charlotte\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Rate_of_Property_Crime_in_Charlotte\"><\/span>Rate of Property Crime in Charlotte<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>In Charlotte, property crimes, including burglary and vehicle theft, are above the national average, registering\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.neighborhoodscout.com\/nc\/charlotte\/crime#data\">34.7 cases per 1,000 residents<\/a> in 2024, a slight uptick over 2023. The city noted an uptick in cases from <a href=\"https:\/\/spectrumlocalnews.com\/nc\/charlotte\/news\/2023\/07\/12\/crime-in-charlotte-up-11---led-by-juvenile-car-thefts--police-say#:~:text=Violent%20crimes%3A%203%2C406%20offenses%20in,compared%20to%20733%20in%202022\">15,475 in 2022 to 17,873<\/a>, ranking it at 53.6 in the crime indices range in 2023.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Although daunting, especially compared to figures from New York and the U.S. (24.9 and 35.4, respectively), these stats are not being ignored. City authorities are on their toes, enhancing preventive measures and nurturing community bonds.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The focus? Compared to smaller towns and cities, crime is certainly high in Charlotte. However, it still comes out as reasonably safe, relative to other cities of its size. It ranks as safer than Indianapolis or Jacksonville, but not quite as safe as Austin, New York City, or Boston.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Unfortunately, crime rates in Charlotte rose in 2024, after a decline in 2023 (itself likely a decline from COVID highs.) There were 5,662 violent offenses in 2024, compared to 5,342 in 2023.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 id=\"h-homicide-rate-in-charlotte\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Homicide_rate_in_Charlotte\"><\/span>Homicide rate in Charlotte<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Homicides in Charlotte rose from 65 in 2023 to 83 in 2024, with a particularly acute rise in homicides committed by young people (a 300% increase, year over year.)<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>A testament to the city&#8217;s commitment towards a safer future, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department confiscated over\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbtv.com\/2023\/04\/20\/cmpd-800-guns-seized-first-quarter-2023\/\">800 guns<\/a>\u00a0in the first quarter of 2023 alone. The continued efforts in making the streets safer and lowering these tragic figures is a priority, making every effort to ensure that every resident of Charlotte can live a life free of fear.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 id=\"h-rate-of-traffic-fatalities-in-charlotte\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Rate_of_traffic_fatalities_in_Charlotte\"><\/span>Rate of traffic fatalities in Charlotte<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>In Charlotte, traffic fatalities average 75 deaths yearly, while pedestrians and cyclists face their share of risks. Between 2018 and 2022, the city saw a noticeable\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.charlotteobserver.com\/news\/local\/article271595267.html\">decline of 55%<\/a> in severe injuries or fatalities involving pedestrians and bicyclists, with 47 cases in 2018 dropping to 30 in 2020. Remarkably, about 1,900 individuals walked away from such incidents in 2020 with either minor or no injuries.In 2023, Charlotte saw a slight uptick, with 69 killed by cars.
