The city is committed to changing its image, particularly when it comes to crime.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Baltimore has taken a hit lately when it comes to publicity about crime. Like cities across the country, it has earned unwanted headlines with horrific homicides. The city ranks in the \u2018top 10 most dangerous cities by popular \u2018ranking\u2019 websites like <em>Forbes<\/em>, WalletHub and <em>US News<\/em>. Does this mean <em>all<\/em> of the city is dangerous? Of course not. If you can work from anywhere and want a city with history, culture and recreation nearby, Baltimore may check all the boxes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_Safe_Do_You_Feel_in_Baltimore_City\"><\/span><strong>How Safe Do You Feel in Baltimore City?&nbsp;<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Safety\u2019 is often a perception driven by news, online communities and personal experience. The website Niche.com rates states, cities and neighborhood on \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.niche.com\/places-to-live\/baltimore-md\/crime-safety\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">safety\u2019<\/a> as well as other metrics.&nbsp; Overall, the city (in comparison to others nationwide) receives a D- rating.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A small (non-statistically significant) sample poll of 94 residents noted an \u2018average\u2019 sense of safety:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td>Very safe. There are no safety concerns&nbsp;<\/td><td>6%&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Pretty safe. There are some safety concerns, but I generally feel safe.&nbsp;<\/td><td>41%&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Somewhat safe. There are noticeable safety concerns, and there are times I don&#8217;t feel safe.&nbsp;<\/td><td>37%&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Not safe. There are high safety concerns, and I regularly don&#8217;t feel safe.&nbsp;<\/td><td>15%&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Crime_in_Baltimore_the_Naked_Truth\"><\/span><strong>Crime in Baltimore, the Naked Truth<\/strong>&nbsp;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Before we start. The <em>city<\/em> of Baltimore is surrounded by Baltimore <em>County<\/em> that includes many smaller towns (Towson for example). Both track crime separately. In this article we will focus on solely on the city of Baltimore.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The city has responded to national headlines and crime rates with a commitment to better policing and transparency. In July 2021, the city created The Baltimore City Comprehensive Violence Prevention Plan with an interactive new <a href=\"https:\/\/app.powerbigov.us\/view?r=eyJrIjoiZjcyZDY5NWYtNTBlZS00OTg0LTgyNDQtOWYwMDEyOGI5Y2M1IiwidCI6IjMxMmNiMTI2LWM2YWUtNGZjMi04MDBkLTMxOGU2NzljZTZjNyJ9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Public Safety Accountability Dashboard<\/a>.&nbsp; This provides the public with details on crime incidents in summary and by neighborhood.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Historically crime rates in Baltimore from 2010 to 2019 ranged between 64 to 71 crimes per 1,000 citizens. During the Covid years (2020 and 2021) crime dropped to 50 per 1,000. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/apps\/dashboards\/3846339df2164875b8440974705e2e6a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">View<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Overall, for 2022-2023 crime in Baltimore in some categories <a href=\"https:\/\/app.powerbigov.us\/view?r=eyJrIjoiZjcyZDY5NWYtNTBlZS00OTg0LTgyNDQtOWYwMDEyOGI5Y2M1IiwidCI6IjMxMmNiMTI2LWM2YWUtNGZjMi04MDBkLTMxOGU2NzljZTZjNyJ9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">improved<\/a>, i.e. dropped.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Homicide_Rates_in_Baltimore\"><\/span>Homicide Rates in Baltimore<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Murders are down 17% in Baltimore in 2023 versus 2022. In 2022 WalletHub ranked the city <em>2nd<\/em> in its list of 40 \u2018Cities with the Biggest Homicide Rate Problems.\u2019 <em>In 2023 it did not even make the <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/wallethub.com\/edu\/cities-homicide-rate\/94070\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>list<\/em><\/a>, while popular cities like Austin, Seattle and Colorado Springs did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Violent_Crime_in_Baltimore\"><\/span>Violent Crime in Baltimore<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This includes robbery, carjacking, assault and rape. Violent crimes are down across all categories 5.5%. Robbery and carjacking are down 21%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Property_Crime_in_Baltimore\"><\/span>Property Crime in Baltimore<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Crimes against property remain a problem, increasing 47% in 2023. This includes burglary (down 7%), larceny, e.g., shoplifting, auto theft, and arson (up 19%). While property crimes dropped drastically during Covid, the rate has increased to pre-2020 levels in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Most_Dangerous_Neighborhoods_in_Baltimore\"><\/span><strong>Most Dangerous Neighborhoods in Baltimore<\/strong>&nbsp;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With the interactive dashboard one can search any of the ninety-one neighborhoods and find current crime data (year to date). Homes in the lower-value area have dropped 13% in&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Madison \/ East End<\/strong> (34.3 incidents per 1,000 residents) \u2013 Homes with the Madison zip code average $116,000.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Safest_Neighborhoods_in_Baltimore\"><\/span><strong>Safest Neighborhoods in Baltimore<\/strong>&nbsp;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Several neighborhoods in Baltimore had very low violent crime rates. Nearly all are located in the northern part of Baltimore City:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Greater Roland Park \/ Poplar Hill<\/strong> (2.1 incidents per 1,000 residents)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Cross Country \/ Cheswolde<\/strong> (2.5 incidents per 1,000 residents)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>North Baltimore \/ Guilford \/ Homeland<\/strong> (2.6 incidents per 1,000 residents)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>Mount Washington \/ Coldspring<\/strong> (2.9 incidents per 1,000 residents).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Home Values in the Safest Neighborhoods in Baltimore<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Greater Roland Park \/ Poplar Hill<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Average home value in mid-2023 in the popular Rolland Park area is $624,000. Condos average $225,000. Roland Park was the first planned suburb community in the United States and offers stately homes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Cross Country \/ Cheswolde<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zillow rates the price of a single-family home at $420,000. Condos average $243,000.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>North Baltimore \/ Guilford \/ Homeland<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Homeland zip code shows on Zillow an average home value of $330,000. Condos average $208,000 in mid 2023.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mount Washington \/ Coldspring<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Homes in this popular residential area average $480,000.
