Mother Nature coexists beautifully with bustling cities and there\u2019s a fascinating mix of global corporations and small businesses, art-focused culture and outdoor adventure, and \u2013 particularly in the urban areas &#8211; a diverse and progressive population.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But it\u2019s not all forests, gray days, incessant drizzle and the ocean though \u2013 you\u2019ll find that landscape mostly in Western Washington. The Cascade Mountain Range knifes through the state of Washington dividing it into two parts \u2013\u2013 Western and Eastern Washington. People expect excellence in their mugs, and there are numerous coffee houses that deliver the optimum caffeine experience. There are also fantastic craft breweries in Washington &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fremontbrewing.com\/\">Fremont Brewing<\/a> in Seattle is a standby, with a newly-launched non-alcoholic beer line.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><b>Summer \u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while the rest of the country melts into sweaty little pools of humidity-induced delirium, or roasts in unceasing heat, people in the western part of Washington state are living their best lives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><b>No state income tax <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Washington state does not have a personal or corporate income tax. (but be aware that, like the other eight states who don\u2019t collect income tax, Washington makes its money by imposing other taxes. Here, you may be on the hook for\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dor.wa.gov\/taxes-rates\/business-occupation-tax\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">business and occupation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(B&amp;O) and\/or\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dor.wa.gov\/taxes-rates\/other-taxes\/public-utility-tax\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">public utility tax<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0Property taxes may also be higher than in states that collect income tax. Sales tax rates are set by each community. <\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 id=\"h-3-the-cons-of-moving-to-washington-the-money\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Drawbacks_to_moving_to_Washington\"><\/span>Drawbacks to moving to Washington<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><b>Money <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Washington is an expensive state to call home. The cost of living in Washington is 17% higher than the national average, and housing is 29% higher than the national average. Food, clothing, entertainment and medical services like basic dental care and checkups are around 19% higher than elsewhere in the U.S. But utilities are 7% lower, largely due to Washington&#8217;s abundant hydroelectric power.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><b>Roads <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Whoever designed the roadways in the western part of the state (Seattle-Tacoma, we\u2019re looking at you) seems to have a grudge against drivers. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Signs are hard to spot, lanes are cramped, on-ramps have stop signs, left lanes morph into exit ramps \u2026 it\u2019s all just so very whimsical.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><b>Attitude <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 We hate to slap the whole state with what is somewhat of a stereotype, but there is a pervasive passive-aggressive attitude in some of the bigger cities. Nothing wrong with politely letting people know you are aggravating them, but it can be maddening for folks moving here from more straightforward states.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><b>Volcanoes <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Washington is one of the 12 U.S. states with active volcanoes. The best known of the bunch is Mount St. Helens, which is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire. It\u2019s 1980 eruption caused 57 deaths and destroyed 250 homes, as well as numerous roads, bridges and railways.\u00a0 It\u2019s the volcano most likely to erupt of the<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> five active volcanoes in the state, but you\u2019ll learn to keep a wary eye on all of them when you move here. With a 4.7% unemployment rate, it&#8217;s not a terrible place to get a ob.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics reinforces the fact that Washington state\u2019s urban areas are experiencing a tight labor market. Technology and manufacturing firms led the way with hiring, while there is a bit of a rebound in leisure and hospitality industries too. A lot of people initially come here for job opportunities, get seduced by the city\u2019s beauty, and never leave. And no, it doesn&#8217;t rain all the time. You\u2019ll stay drier here than you will in Manhattan or Miami. That said, the skies tend to be gray from October through May. The city\u2019s culture centers on nature and its music scene, and is the very definition of laid-back, housing costs here are double (median: $847K) the average for much of the U.S. You\u2019ll mostly find young professionals here, families with kids tend to gravitate to smaller nearby towns and suburbs for space and cost reasons.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><b>Tacoma<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is nicknamed the<\/span><b> \u201c<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">City of Destiny\u201d, and is Seattle\u2019s next door neighbor. It\u2019s noticeably <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">less expensive, less crowded, less crazy than Seattle, and it has a much better view of Mount Rainier too. It\u2019s a great place to do business and was ranked by Forbes for being one of the top cities in the United States for young professionals. The arts scene is especially lively \u2013 head over the 6<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Avenue Art District to start your explorations. America\u2019s third-largest Independence Day celebration happens here, and there\u2019s also Taste of Tacoma, Ethnic Fest, Tacoma Pride and the Tacoma Film Festival to enjoy. Median listing price here is $519K, up sharply from a couple years ago, but still quite affordable by Washington state standards.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><b>Spokane \u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a state that is exceptionally gorgeous, Spokane stands out as one of Washington\u2019s prettiest cities. A river runs right through downtown, and the city lives up to its motto: &#8220;Near Nature, Near Perfect.&#8221; It\u2019s a peaceful place, with the benefits of big city pleasures like a lively food, entertainment and arts scene. Natural wonder abounds here, plus you\u2019re less than an hour\u2019s drive away from 76 lakes, a dozen or so rivers and one of Washington\u2019s true gems\u2026 Lake Coeur d\u2019Alene. Cost of living is below the national average, and the city is a great place for young professionals, families and retirees.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><b>Duvall <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a suburb of Seattle, and is home to people with some of the highest incomes in the state, but the median price of housing here is relatively low, at $964K. It\u2019s got a bit of a rural feel, and boasts excellent schools and parks. Beyond that, the city\u2019s devotion to festivals is a big draw for many. During the summer there\u2019s the Duvall Days celebration, weekly concerts in McCormick Park, and the annual Sandblast Festival of the Arts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><b>Mercer Island <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sits in the middle of Lake Washington between Seattle and Bellevue, and is a little slice of heaven that comes at a hellish price tag. The cost of living here is nearly three times as high as the Washington average, but the schools are great, the beaches are outstanding, and the amenities are fantastic. If you can afford it, it\u2019s a wonderful place for families and retirees.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><b>Sammamish<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is perfect for families, with excellent schools, scenery and safety. The median price for a home is $1.6 million, and they they have one of the highest median household income in Washington at $215K annually. While it&#8217;s expensive, the local economy here is booming. Seattle is a 15 minute drive (or 50 minutes on public transportation) away.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><b>Redmond<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a Seattle suburb on the northern shore of Lake Sammamish. It\u2019s home to well-known tech companies like<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Microsoft and Nintendo of America, and the residents tend to be young \u2013 the median age is 34 \u2013 and well paid with the average income slightly over $79,890. Median home price is an eye-watering 1.36 million. Like much of the state, nature is the big draw here, along with brew pubs, coffee shops, casual dining and a vibrant arts and music scene.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Reasons_to_Move_to_Washington_State\"><\/span>Reasons to Move to Washington State<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><b>Top-performing schools \u2013 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One report dubs Washington the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/best-states\/rankings\/education\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">13th best state for education<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (oh, and the 8th state overall, but who\u2019s counting?). As of the most recent school year, the high-school graduation rate is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.publicschoolreview.com\/graduation-rate-stats\/washington\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">84%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is in the ballpark of the national average (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.publicschoolreview.com\/average-graduation-rate-stats\/national-data\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">87%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). The math and reading proficiency levels in Washington State are also higher than the national average, coming in at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.publicschoolreview.com\/washington\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">50% for math and 59% for reading<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In comparison, the national averages are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.publicschoolreview.com\/average-math-proficiency-stats\/national-data\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">38%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.publicschoolreview.com\/average-rla-proficiency-stats\/national-data\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">46%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, respectively.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><b>Numerous colleges and universities \u2013 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sbctc.edu\/becoming-a-student\/four-year-degree\/four-year-schools\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">six public universities in Washington State and 300+ independent colleges<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That means that whether you have kids at home who want to go to school close to home, or you\u2019re looking to meet young professionals and singles in that age group, Washington State could be a great place for you. Not to mention, the colleges and universities in Washington are highly ranked, with the best school being the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.4icu.org\/us\/washington\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">University of Washington<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The aforementioned US News ranks Washington the 3rd best for higher education.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><b>One of the happiest states \u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If you consult your friend Google, there are many reports on the happiest states. You\u2019ll get different answers no matter where you look, but one thing is for sure: Washington State is one of the happiest on most reports. It\u2019s even called the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.realsimple.com\/happiest-states-us-study-6822605\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seventh-happiest state<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, according to one report. Why? There could be lots of reasons for that, from the outdoor life to the coffee. (Let\u2019s be honest. The coffee is enough of a reason to convince us!)<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><b>All four seasons \u2013 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enough said, really. Washington has all four seasons. That\u2019s right! You get beautiful summers, sure, but you also get the luxury of breathtaking falls, winters, and springs. The sun is out in the summer, the leaves change colors in the fall, snow falls in the winter, and flowers bloom in the spring. It\u2019s everything you could want! <\/span><b>Scenery \u2013 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The state is something out of a storybook in Washington State. From beautiful waterfalls, lakes, rivers, and coastlines to rolling hills and mountains, the scenery in Washington is sure to dazzle you. (Even if you don\u2019t end up moving to Washington, be sure to have your smartphone ready to take plenty of pictures! You will want to remember your visit.)<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Reasons_Not_to_Move_to_Washington_State\"><\/span>Reasons Not to Move to Washington State<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><b>Traffic \u2013 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve ever been to Seattle, you know how congested it can get. There are only <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geekwire.com\/2020\/seattle-traffic-congestion-14th-worst-u-s-average-commuter-lost-74-hours-2019\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">13 cities with worse traffic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the entire country. In fact, in 2019 alone, most commuters lost 74 hours just sitting in traffic. There<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> parts of Washington State where traffic isn\u2019t bad (Eastern Washington, for instance), but the West side can come with some pretty long commute times due to the sole amount of drivers on the road.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><b>Housing costs \u2013 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cost to buy a home is so high in Washington State that it deserves a section of its own. The median home cost is $581K<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is significantly higher than the national average median home cost of $420K. (That goes to show that if you move to Washington State, you\u2019ll need to secure a good-paying job as quickly as possible if you hope to buy a home. It\u2019s a good thing the state is known for its strong economy.)<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><b>Snow \u2013 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You know how we said that one of the best things about Washington is that it has all four seasons and some pretty glorious summers? Well, that means one thing: the winters can get very\u2026wintery. That means snow! The state gets <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wrcc.dri.edu\/Climate\/narrative_wa.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">50-75 inches of snow<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in low-elevation areas and up to 400-600 inches of snow and counting at higher elevations.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><b>Wildfires \u2013 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The weather can get extra dry in Washington State at times, and when combined with wind, that can lead to a fire. Many parts of the state have to be extremely cautious and have a plan of action in place in case of a fire, especially during wildfire season, which tends to go from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mil.wa.gov\/wildfire\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">July to September<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><b>Above-average transportation costs \u2013 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Transportation is 13.6% more expensive in Washington State than in the rest of the country as a whole.
